
Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system and play a vital role in our communities. With healthcare needs on the rise, the demand for qualified nurses has never been higher. Choosing a career in nursing is an admirable and rewarding decision – thank you for considering this path! If you’re exploring how to become a nurse and are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options, you are not alone. There are several pathways to nursing in Ontario; understanding them is key to making the best choices for your future.
We have compiled facts you should know so that you can make an informed decision on your career path towards nursing as you’re entering or completing your online high school courses. It is important to be aware of the university/college acceptance process from an online school, and know what you will need to not only meet the OSSD requirements, but to make the most of your education with Ontario Virtual School. Outlined below are the different types of nurses and the general path to achieving each title. If you are a mature student still hoping to obtain the required courses to apply to Nursing school, talk to our guidance and student success staff to find courses in our self-paced online high school.
Types of Nursing

Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
- Education: 2-year diploma from an Ontario college (4 semesters)
- Licensing: Must pass the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE)
- Work settings: Long-term care, rehabilitation centres, community clinics, and hospital units with stable patient conditions
- Note: RPNs provide essential care but typically work under the supervision of an RN or physician.

Registerd Nurses (RNs)
- Education: 4 year university degree – either a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) or a Bachelor of Nursing (BN)
- Licensing: Must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN)
- Work settings: Hospitals (ICU, ER, surgical units), public health, community health and leadership roles
- Note: RNs have a broader scope of practice, including a high autonomy in assessment, planning and clinical decision making.

Nurse Pactitioners (NPs)
- Education: Must first become an RN, then complete a Master’s degree in Nursing along with advanced clinical training
- Work settings: Community care, long-term care, hospitals, NP-led clinics. NPs can diagnose certain conditions and prescribe certain medications.

OVS Pathway
For all streams of nursing, you must complete an OSSD or equivalent. Nursing is a competitive program, which is why we offer courses that you can upgrade your high school marks online! Taking courses with OVS also allows you to fast track your high school courses, allowing you to start your career sooner!
The courses below are important to consider to ensure you have the appropriate prerequisite for university or college applications. These courses will be in addition to requirements needed to obtain your OSSD. It is important that you check in with one of our guidance and student success staff, but here are some courses that you will need to take in Grade 12:
English

ENG4U, Grade 12 English
This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life.

ENG4C, Grade 12 College English
This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life.
Mathematics

MHF4U, Grade 12 Advanced Functions
MHF4U extends students’ experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.

MCV4U, Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors
This course builds on students’ previous experience with functions and their developing understanding of rates of change. Students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors and representations of lines and planes in three dimensional space.

MDM4U, Grade 12 Mathematics of Data Management
This course broadens students’ understanding of mathematics as it relates to managing data. Students will apply methods for organizing and analysing large amounts of information.
Chemistry

SCH4U, Grade 12 Chemistry
This course allows students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of organic chemistry, energy changes and rates of reaction, chemical systems and equilibrium, electrochemistry, and atomic and molecular structure.

SCH4C, Grade 12 Chemistry
This course allows students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of organic chemistry, energy changes and rates of reaction, chemical systems and equilibrium, electrochemistry, and atomic and molecular structure.
Biology

SBI4U, Grade 12 Biology
This course provides students with the opportunity for in-depth study of the concepts and processes associated with biological systems.
