The Summer Reset: A Time for Students to Recharge, Reflect, and Refocus

The beauty of summer lies in the endless possibilities of how this precious time can be spent. Some of us use it as a time to catch up on unfinished projects or pursue tasks that were impossible to complete during the busy school year. Others are intentional about pressing pause on to-do lists and letting the stillness take over. The majority of us, however, fall somewhere in the middle, rather than an all or nothing approach to how the summer days are spent.

Pressing Pause

One of the common feelings amongst students during a break of any sort is that the summer break should be productive. And if it isn’t, then there’s a sense of underlying anxiety that makes us feel that we’re falling behind. There is research to suggest, however, that detaching from schoolwork can promote academic success. In fact, such research even shows that purposeful pauses can help the brain recover, organize what it has learned, and prepare for what comes next. So instead of feeling like students are missing out, summer offers students a valuable opportunity to recharge physically, reflect on their progress, and refocus on the habits and goals that will support future success.

Recharging in Nature

While many of our students at Ontario Virtual School join us virtually from various climates all over the world, the OVS head office is located in Toronto, Canada where it is currently the peak summer season. For Canadian students, this is the perfect time to take advantage of more daylight and warmer weather, allowing for more time to be spent outdoors. According to research on Attention Restoration Theory, it is suggested that natural environments can help restore directed attention after mental fatigue. What is more, another study in 2025 on nature exposure and cognitive performance found that there is a link between natural environments and improved cognitive performance. What this means is that there is value in giving yourself permission to get outdoors and you might actually get ahead because you’ll be far more prepared to engage in school work when the time comes.

Time to Reflect

The intensity and fast pace of the school year often prevents students from being able to properly reflect on both progress and goals. Students might think that taking time to reflect is a waste of time, that letting your mind wander is not a good use of time. But there is interesting research on a concept called the “incubation effect”, whereby an individual has been working on a problem with no solution, but then they step away from the problem and the answer suddenly comes to them. The idea here is that sometimes we may be stuck on our pathway or the next credit we’re going to take, but taking a moment to reset may actually provide us with the insight we’ve been looking for and space to process. In this way, summer can give students the space to think differently, reflect on their goals, and return with a fresh perspective.

Ready to Refocus

The natural outcome of taking time to recharge and reflect is that students are well-equipped to re-focus. This may include reviewing what went well the previous year and what changes may need to be made for the upcoming year. Some components of the refocus may include marks needed, credits earned, prerequisites required, learning skills honed, and goals to work on before September. Without taking the time to consolidate what was learned over the school year and how this learning contributes to future growth, decisions might be made in haste and not grounded in thought.

OVS Helps Students Move Forward

Once students have taken the time needed to recharge, reflect and refocus, Ontario Virtual School is there to support students in moving forward with their goals. For some students, this might mean upgrading a Gr. 11 or 12 course in order to enhance their application for post-secondary education. For other students, it might mean taking a couple of courses in a specialty area such as French Immersion, where there are often limited classes offered in day school. There may also be students who need to complete specific credits in order to obtain their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), such as a Gr. 12 English Course (ENG4U) or a Gr. 10 Science Course (SNC2D).

FAQ

1. Why is summer a good time for students to reset?
Summer offers students a natural pause between the demands of one school year and the next. This time can be used to recharge physically, reflect on academic progress, and refocus on future goals. Rather than seeing summer as lost time, students can view it as an opportunity to return to learning with greater energy, clarity, and motivation.

2. Does taking a break from schoolwork mean students are falling behind?
Not necessarily. Taking a purposeful pause can actually support learning. Research suggests that stepping away from schoolwork for a short period of time can help the brain recover, organize what it has learned, and prepare for future learning. A summer reset does not mean students stop caring about school; it means they are giving themselves time to restore their focus.

3. How can students use the summer to reflect on their academic goals?
Students can use the summer to think about what went well during the previous school year and what changes they may want to make moving forward. This might include reviewing marks, completed credits, required prerequisites, learning skills, or post-secondary goals. Taking time to reflect can help students make more thoughtful decisions about their next steps.

4. How can OVS support students after they have recharged and refocused?
Ontario Virtual School can help students move forward with their academic goals in a flexible and supportive learning environment. Students may choose to upgrade a Grade 11 or 12 course, complete a required OSSD credit, take a course not available at their day school, or explore a specialty area such as French Immersion. OVS staff are available to help students choose the path that best supports their next steps.
