What happens after I register online?

When convenient and as frequently as you like, use your username login and password to access the learning management system. Then at a pace suitable to your learning, you can progress through the interactive lessons, and practise quizzes. When you are ready you can complete the unit evaluations and submit them into the drop box for your teacher to evaluate and provide feedback. All unit evaluations are completed and submitted online. You can type out your answers, do them on paper and scan them or take a picture of your handwritten work as submission of the evaluations, whatever means you are comfortable with. After you receive a grade and feedback, you can then proceed to the next unit and so forth until the course is complete. If you are not satisfied with your level of achievement, you may make a request to redo the summative(s) in order to demonstrate your true level of understanding of the concepts. At the mid-point in the course, we will mail you a first report card, and upon completion of the remaining units and the proctored final exam you will be mailed a final report card.

How To be a suitable online learner?

In most cases, this form of course delivery works well to support all types of learning styles. Students should be motivation to excel, have familiarity with basic computer applications (word processer, web browser), and possess the ability to work independently. Remember there is also an Ontario trained and certified teacher assigned to assist, encourage and communicate with you and will be able to help you achieve your goals in the course.

How long does it take to do an online course?

One of the greatest features of on-line learning is the flexibility it provides in allowing you to customize your schedule to complete the course at your own pace. Course progress is measured on the completion of the assignments, discussions and summative evaluations. You can login to your course and work at any time and at any pace. Students are eligible to write the final exam after completing the minimal number of hours (110 hours).

For example: studying 4hrs a day will enable you to complete the course in just four weeks. If you require a slower pace you can take up to 12 months to complete a course.

If I am in another province or in another country, can I still take an online credit course with OVS?

Yes. You are able to take any courses through Ontario Virtual School.

Refund Policy

Please note that there are no refunds through OVS, students can however request in writing to transfer to another available OVS course within 7 days of their initial registration provided that the student has the prerequisite for the course they wish to transfer into.

How do I register for a course?

Successful registration into the course requires you to complete four steps. First, you will need to submit a course request; this is achieved by submitting your information using the “Register Online” tab from the main page. Secondly, you will be required to submit proof of the prerequisite for the course you have applied. Third, is the confirmation of fee payment; currently we are accepting funds through Credit Card or Cheque. Lastly, once the above steps are complete, you will have a link that provides video instructions on how to create your login and password which, once validated, grants you electronic access to the course materials online. If required a textbook will be mailed to your home address soon after.

What is a proctored final exam?

The final exam is typically a paper-pen evaluation written at a mutually agreed time, date, and location. The final exam will be proctored, meaning a suitable adult will supervise you writing the final exam. This process ensures the security and integrity of the exam.

Do you sent marks directly to Universities, Collages, and Day School?

Yes, we can send marks directly to OUAC. OCAS, and Day School. Just make sure to provide your teacher with your OUAC/OCAS number.

What is the role of the teacher?

The primary responsibility of the teacher is that of a facilitator…one who supports all learners to be successful in the course. This is achieved through answering questions via email, scheduled office hours, monitored threaded discussions and chat topics, providing valuable feedback on evaluations and providing multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning.

If I am registered as a full-time or part-time student at a regular high school, can I still take an online credit course with OVS?

Absolutely…. Since Ontario Virtual School is a private school, students do not require permission to take any course from their regularly attended day school. When you have successfully finished the course with us, we will send you one copy of the report card and a second copy will be forwarded to your day school. Your day school will then add this credit to your ongoing transcript. Upon request, OVS can also forward your marks directly to the Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC). There is no charge for this service. All OSSD high school credits are the same regardless of means of delivery.

Are there any hidden or additional costs?

Depending on the course you are enrolling; a $100 textbook deposit may be required, and this fee will be returned to you after you return the textbook. You will be provided with a prepaid return postage courier envelope with the textbook so you do not incur any postal charges in returning the resources back to our office. You may also be asked by your proctor to pay for the postage to return your completed exam back to our office if a scanner is not available.

What do I need to get started?

You will need a computer; either PC or Mac will run the course content. (Please see the PC requirements tab). You will also need an email address, any type will be fine so long as it can send and receive attachments and lastly you will need a reliable internet provider, which we recommend high speed.
